Legal Aid of Arkansas is a public interest, not-for-profit law firm dedicated to assuring equal access to justice in civil matters for low-income Arkansans through legal representation, advocacy, community partnerships, education and outreach.
Legal Aid is seeking an Economic Justice Workgroup Leader. The Attorney/Advocate will handle a public benefits related caseload. (SSD/SSI, SNAP, Medicaid/Medicare, employment, and special education/school discipline cases), as well as other general staff attorney duties as assigned. The position will be located in Jonesboro.
The primary responsibilities of the attorney will be case intake and assessment, plus direct advocacy and representation in administrative and court hearings for clients denied access to public benefits, involvement in additional appeals, and assisting in developing strategies as a member of the Management team to address systemic problems that adversely impact Legal Aid’s client population.
Minimum qualifications include a Juris Doctor or 2-3 years’ experience as a public benefits advocate, and a commitment to helping poor and disadvantaged people overcome the institutional barriers to access to employment and medical and income support. Preference will be given to those licensed to practice in Arkansas or eligible to sit for the next bar exam or reciprocity, those experienced with administrative hearings, Federal disability benefits, and ODAR hearings. Spanish language proficiency preferred but not required.
