Staff Attorney – Southern Poverty Law Center – Montgomery, AL

The Southern Poverty Law Center seeks an attorney to join its Montgomery, Alabama office.  The Southern Poverty Law Center is dedicated to fighting hate and bigotry, and to seeking justice for the most vulnerable members of our society.  Our Legal Department works on cases involving the rights of children, prisoners, immigrants, the LGBT community, victims of hate crimes, and issues affecting economically disadvantaged communities.

Primary Job Functions:

  • Litigates cases under supervision of Managing Attorney and/or Senior Staff Attorneys;
  • Develop new cases in consultation with Deputy Legal Directors, Managing Attorney, and/or Senior Staff Attorneys;
  • Respond to requests for legal assistance;
  • Represents SPLC in various forums, including before community groups, legislators and state agencies;

Qualifications – Education and Related Work Experience:

  • Juris Doctor degree;
  • Strong academic background;
  • 1-4 years’ legal experience
  • Excellent research and writing skills;
  • Demonstrated commitment to public interest law

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Creativity and a demonstrated willingness to take calculated risks in crafting and executing strategies;
  • Initiative, vision, and a strong commitment to the struggle for social justice;
  • Ability to prioritize responsibilities and have fun in a high-energy, fast paced work environment
