School of Law to Recognize Integration Anniversary, Celebrate Six Decades of Success
Silas Hunt, the first African American student admitted to a Southern public university without litigation in the modern era, registered to attend the University of Arkansas School of Law Feb. 2, 1948. To celebrate the 60th anniversary of Hunt’s enrollment, the School of Law hosted a panel discussion titled “Sixty Since Silas: A Celebration of Pioneering Excellence” Monday, Feb. 4, in the E.J. Ball Courtroom.

Alumni Accomplishments:
- Bill Bowen (’49) was inducted into the Arkansas Business Hall of Fame during a reception Friday, Feb. 8, 2008, at the Statehouse Convention Center in Little Rock. The Business Hall of Fame is designed to honor, preserve and perpetuate the names and outstanding accomplishments of business leaders who have brought lasting fame to Arkansas.
- Tiffany L. Burnett (’07) joined the Slinkard Law Firm in Rogers, Ark., as an associate attorney.
- J. Robert Dean (’88) was promoted to partner at the law firm of Ohlandt, Greeley, Ruggiero & Perle in Stamford, Conn. Dean joined the firm in 2000 as a patent attorney.
- Dr. G. David Gearhart (’77) was unanimously approved to become the next University of Arkansas Chancellor. Gearhart, who has served as vice chancellor for university advancement since 1998, will begin his new role July 1, 2008.
- Kathryn R. Hake (’07) joined the law firm of Hood & Stacy, P.A. in Bentonville, Ark., as an associate attorney. Her practice is focused on estate planning, contract law and commercial litigation.
- Robert L. Jones III (’69) joined the law firm of Conner & Winters in its Fayetteville office as a partner and trial attorney. In his nearly 40 years of practice, he has concentrated on motor carrier defense, products liability, professional liability and commercial litigation.
- Maj. Gen. Hugh Overholt, retired, (’57) of New Bern, N.C., was reappointed to the North Carolina Advisory Commission on Military Affairs by Gov. Mike Easley.
- Amber Prince (’07) joined the law firm of Conner & Winters in its Fayetteville office as an associate attorney.

- Teresa Stafford has been hired as the director of development and external relations for the School of Law.
- Guzman to Retire
- Rafael Guzman, a criminal law and evidence professor, will retire at the end of the spring 2008 semester.
- Supreme Court Cites Leflar
- Professor Rob Leflar’s Tennessee Law Review article "The Preemption Pentad" (1997, with Bob Adler) was cited twice in Riegel v. Medtronic, Inc., a Supreme Court decision released Tuesday, Feb. 20.
- Foster Published Twice
- Professor Sharon Foster's article, “Prelude to Compatibility Between Human Rights and Intellectual Property,” has been accepted for publication in the Chicago Journal of International Law.

- Maxwell Receives Michelle Lee Bartlett Endowed Award
- Diana Maxwell, a second year law student from Monticello, has been awarded the Michelle Lee Bartlett Award for writing the top paper in the fall semester criminal procedure class.
