Trial Competition

October 2006

Attention 2L & 3L Students:

The 2006 William H. "Buddy" Sutton Trial Competition will be held September 25 to October 6, with Preliminary Rounds the first week and Elimination Rounds the second.

All eligible students are encouraged to participate. Participants are NOT required to have completed Evidence or Trial Advocacy to participate in the Trial Competition.

The number of Trial Competition team slots is limited to 32 total teams. The 2006 Board of Advocates Trial Competition Committee has attempted to make this year's Selection Process as fair as it can be. We recognize that there will be some concern no matter what process we use, but ask that each student respect the decisions we have made. Therefore, it is important that each student who wishes to participate on a two-person team pay close attention to the content of this email.

The 2006 Trial Competition Selection Process will be as follows:

1. All 2005-06 members and alternates of the U of A School of Law Traveling Trial Teams will be given an automatic entry into the 2006-07 Trial Competition. Trial Team members and alternates were chosen last year based on their performance in the 2005 Trial Competition and a Trial Team Selection Process (Try-Out) led by Professor Mullane. Those selected practiced and competed in tournaments throughout the United States. 6 of the 32 team entries into the 2006 Trial Competition will be taken by Trial Team members and/or alternates.

2. The remaining 26 Team Slots will be divided into 2L and 3L slots on a 50/50 basis. 13 slots will be designated for 2L teams and 13 slots will be designated for 3L teams. Please note: a team consisting of one 2L and one 3L will be counted as a 3L team for selection purposes.

3. All interested 2L and 3L teams must send at least one team member to sign up for the "lottery." The Lottery Sign Up will be held on Thursday, September 7 from 7:00 a.m. until 8:15 a.m. There will be NO weighting in the lottery. Students will be given no preference for the order in which they sign up. There will be NO exceptions granted to any teams who do not present at least one team member for sign up.

*** While only one team member is required to show up for the lottery sign up, the team member who is not present must sign and complete the attached form indicating his or her desire to compete. This form must be submitted by the signing team member when signing up on Thursday, September 7 between 7:00 a.m. and 8:15 a.m. See attached “Team Member Proxy.”

4. Upon completion of the lottery sign up period, all entries will be taken directly to the office of Dean Nance. The entries will be divided into 2L teams and 3L teams, placed on standard size ballots, and put into a container and shaken (but not stirred) thoroughly.

Either Dean Nance or another Dean will pull 13 team entries from each container. Dean Nance or another Dean will then pull an additional 3 team entries from each container so that there are three 2L team alternates and three 3L team alternates. In the event that either a 2L or 3L team is unable to compete in the Trial Competition, the alternate teams will be offered a slot in the order in which they were drawn out.

5. Upon completion of the lottery drawing, the list of selected and alternate teams will be published via campus wide email. If, after selection, a team is unable to compete, that team must notify the Trial Competition Chair, Hadley Hindmarsh (formerly Hadley Carson) (hcarson@uark.edu or 479-366-1805) by Saturday, September 9 at 5:00 p.m. Any team or team member who drops out of the Competition after Saturday, September 9 at 5:00 p.m. may be deemed ineligible for Board of Advocates membership and/or future Board of Advocates competitions.

6. Any questions, concerns or complaints regarding the Selection Process for the 2006 William H “Buddy” Sutton Trial Competition should be addressed to Trial Competition Chair: Hadley Carson Hindmarsh (hcarson@uark.edu or 479-366-1805).

Thank you for your time and good luck!
