School of Law Recognizes Student Pro Bono Volunteers

The University of Arkansas School of Law’s Pro Bono Program will host its fifth annual awards ceremony to honor students who are making a positive difference in the community. The event is scheduled for Monday, April 25, in the Bobby McDaniel Trial Practice Classroom (room 342) in Leflar Law Center. The ceremony and luncheon are open to the public.

Cason and Jones Capture 2010 Sutton Barristers Union Trial Competition Title

Winners Jones and CasonThe winners of the 2010 William H. Sutton Barristers Union Trial Competition are third-year law students Glenn Cason and Kambira Jones. Cason and Jones defeated the team of Tyler Benson and Eugene Clifford in the final round, held the evening of Monday, October 11. Benson was recipient of the Best Oralist Award for the competition.

Chris Warzecha and Ryan Culpepper

Two University of Arkansas School of Law students won the school’s internal Moot Court competition. Chris Warzecha of Plano, Texas, and Ryan Culpepper of Hot Springs, Ark., emerged victorious in the Benjamin J. Altheimer Moot Court Competition held this spring at the law school. Warzecha and Culpepper represented the respondent and defeated Haley Heath and Brian Johnston, both of Wynne, Ark., who represented the petitioner.

Phuc Nguyen

Phuc NguyenA University of Arkansas School of Law student will travel across the country this summer for an exciting job opportunity.  Phuc Nguyen has accepted an externship with the Office of Staff Attorneys for the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals.  A third-year law student, Nguyen will work in the San Francisco courthouse for eleven weeks this summer.  His responsibilities will include conducting legal research and analysis, which he will present once a month to panels of three judges.

Street Law Program

Street Law ProgramThis fall, a handful of students at the University of Arkansas School of Law created a new program designed to educate high school and college students on basic legal and civic principles. The Street Law Program has since made presentations to more than 350 students in the region on subjects ranging from criminal law to defamation cases involving Facebook and MySpace.

Viet TranA University of Arkansas School of Law student is making a difference across the globe.  Viet Tran, a third year student, recently returned from working with the Rule of Law in Vietnam.  The Rule of Law Initiative is a global program that focuses primarily on legal development and reform in developing countries.  The American Bar Association (ABA) provides legal expertise for these governments and institutions that are working towards improving their structures and practices.
