Lawyer in the Library: Sonya Jin Dodson


Wal-Mart Stores assistant general counsel Sonya Jin Dodson will speak at noon Thursday, March 11, in the Jim Blair Library Commons in the Young Law Library as part of the Lawyer in the Library Series. The talk is free and open to the public and light refreshments will be served.

Sonya Jin Dodson is an assistant general counsel for the Employment Practices Division of the Legal Department for Wal-Mart Stores Inc., where she practices immigration and employment law. In her role, Sonya provides legal support to the Home Office, Walmart US and Sam’s Clubs for the global movement of Walmart Associates to and from the company’s retail facilities in Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Chile, China, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, India, Japan, Mexico, Nicaragua, Puerto Rico and the United Kingdom.

In January 2007, Sonya began her role as an in-house counsel for Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. in the Legal Administration Division, where she was responsible for continuing legal education, professional development, recruiting and Arkansas pipeline programs. During that time, she also assisted in the development and coordination of diversity for the Walmart Legal Department.

Prior to joining Walmart, she was in private practice for three years with the Taylor Law Partners in Fayetteville, Ark.

Sonya received her bachelor’s degree from the University of Wisconsin in Madison and her Juris Doctor from the University of Arkansas School of Law. Licensed in the State of Arkansas since 2003, Sonya is a member of the Arkansas Bar Association and also serves on the Walmart Legal Department Pro Bono Committee, the Women’s Resource Council (Associate Resource Group) and has served on the Walmart Law Day Planning Committee since 2007. Sonya is married to Michael Dodson, who is an attorney with Nolan, Caddell & Reynolds and is the proud mother of two children, Parker (2) and Harrison (5 months).
