Al Witte joined the faculty at the University of Arkansas in 1957 and, except for a brief stint at Emory University in the 1960s, remained a member of the UA faculty until his retirement in 1994. Since then, he has served as an adjunct professor. His main interests during his later years of service have been in contracts and constitutional law. He also has regularly taught a seminar on law and literature.
Professor Witte earned his LL.B. from the University of Wisconsin School of Law and his Ph.B. and M.A. from the University of Chicago. He was elected to the Order of the Coif at the University of Wisconsin.
